The All-China Women's Federation (ACWF) held a teleconference on April 3 to solidly advance Women's Action for Poverty Alleviation initiated in 2015 by the ACWF, and make arrangements for stepping up women's efforts in the final push for the decisive victory in the battle against poverty.
Shen Yueyue, President of the ACWF, emphasized women's role in implementing targeted poverty-alleviation measures to ensure that no impoverished woman is left behind, during her speech at the teleconference.
Noting that lifting all rural residents living below the current poverty line out of poverty by 2020 is a solemn promise made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Shen stated that women's federations at all levels should increase confidence in winning the fight against poverty and remain steadfast in the determination of overcoming difficulties and fulfilling the task of poverty relief.
Shen urged women's federations at all levels to fully cooperate with relevant government departments to investigate and learn about the real situation of impoverished women in special difficulties, women who are liable to fall back to poverty and women fell into poverty or returned to poverty because of novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Women's federations were urged to promote the development of hand-weaving industry and give full play to the positive role of rural e-commerce and housekeeping service in poverty relief. Efforts should be made to guide women to participate in the development of rural tourism, implementing the targeted poverty-alleviation measure via specialty industries.
Efforts should also be enhanced to support the female poverty-stricken workforce in employment and the consumption-oriented poverty alleviation work, implement a pairing-up support mechanism between the west and east regions, and promote the women's poverty alleviation factories, workshops and demonstration bases to resume work and production as soon as possible.
Women's federations across the country were urged to care for women and children in special difficulties including those disadvantaged children and left-behind children whose parents have migrated to other areas for work. Efforts should be made to implement the project of the screening of the breast and cervical cancers and giving relevant assistance, facilitate the charity projects to benefit people in poverty-stricken counties and villages, mobilize women to improve their living environment and spread civilized customs and good family traditions in the rural areas.
Shen also stressed the people-centered development concept, putting women's poverty alleviation to the top priority list and helping impoverished women solve the most difficult and urgent problems.
Huang Xiaowei, Vice-President and First Member of the Secretariat of the ACWF, presided over the conference.
At the meeting, nine representatives from the women's federations of counties, cities, provinces and autonomous regions across the country shared their experience in further advancing women's poverty alleviation and assisting the work and production resumption.
